Mueze Bawany

Candidate for Alderman, Chicago, IL

Mueze Bawany is an educator and community activist running for alderman in Chicago’s 50th Ward. The son of a Pakistani taxi driver, Mueze grew up in the 50th Ward, where he has lived almost all his life. Growing up in the 50th Ward, Mueze gained first-hand experience of working class struggles, but also the resilience of people along with the beauty of diversity and multiculturalism.

Born in Pakistan, Mueze understands the global impacts of the climate crisis. For over a decade Mueze has worked to support immigrants who moved to the 50th Ward after being displaced by the impact of the climate crisis in their home countries.

If elected, Mueze will work not only to rapidly reduce emissions, but to ensure that Chicago remains a welcoming and supportive place for an ever-increasing influx of climate refugees. Mueze will work to implement a Green New Deal for Chicago, one that focuses on shifting to 100% renewable energy while bolstering public education and supporting individuals in transitioning from fossil fuel-related jobs into the green economy. He will work to support Black and Brown communities by ending environmental “sacrifice zones” and utilizing tax increment financing to rebuild communities, prevent displacement, and create educational opportunities and well-paying jobs building a sustainable, just economy.

There are cities in Pakistan that won’t exist soon due to the impacts of the climate emergency. We need to end fossil fuel use in Chicago as quickly as possible, and we also need to welcome, embrace, and support climate refugees from across the planet to become vital members of our community.”
